The South Asian International Association for Early Childhood Care and Development conducts numerous professional development and capacity-building programs for Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) teachers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Association conducted more than 60 online lectures, free of charge, covering the Early Childhood Care and Development NVQ Level 4 curriculum. More than 5,000 ECCD teachers benefited from this free lecture series and were able to obtain the NVQ Level 4 Qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway.

Following the success of this initiative, a group of teachers who wished to obtain the Child Care Giver NVQ Level 4 Qualification through the RPL pathway requested that a similar online lecture series be conducted to strengthen their knowledge and competencies in the Child Care Giver NVQ Level 4 curriculum.

In response to this request, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Child Care Giver – NVQ Level 4 Professional Development Program.

This program has been designed to equip teachers with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required to successfully complete the Child Care Giver NVQ Level 4 Qualification.

After acquiring the required competencies and based on their relevant work experience, participants may apply for the Child Care Giver NVQ Level 4 assessment through the relevant government authorities and accredited assessment centers.

Through this program, participants can develop the competencies required to successfully face the assessment process with confidence, free of charge.

Teachers can access all lectures free of charge through the Sri Lanka Education YouTube Channel or via the Sri Lanka ECCD School Management System.

The Value of a Child Care Giver

A Child Care Giver plays a vital role in laying the foundation for a child’s lifelong learning, health, safety, and overall well-being. During the early years of life, children experience rapid physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and language development. A qualified child care giver creates a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that supports every aspect of a child’s growth.

Beyond providing daily care, a child care giver serves as an educator, mentor, protector, and positive role model. Through responsive interactions, meaningful play experiences, and age-appropriate learning opportunities, they help children develop confidence, independence, creativity, and essential life skills. Their work contributes significantly to preparing children for school and fostering responsible, capable citizens.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Child Care Giver

A professional Child Care Giver is responsible for ensuring the holistic development, safety, and well-being of every child in their care. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing a safe, healthy, and nurturing learning environment.

  • Promoting children’s physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and language development.

  • Planning and implementing age-appropriate learning and play activities.

  • Supporting children’s creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Observing, assessing, and documenting children’s developmental progress.

  • Maintaining children’s health, hygiene, nutrition, and personal care.

  • Ensuring child protection and safeguarding children from abuse, neglect, and harm.

  • Practicing positive guidance and appropriate behaviour management techniques.

  • Communicating effectively with parents, guardians, and families.

  • Encouraging inclusive practices that respect diversity and individual learning needs.

  • Identifying developmental delays or special educational needs and making appropriate referrals when necessary.

  • Maintaining accurate records and complying with national regulations and quality standards.

  • Participating in continuous professional development and lifelong learning.

  • Demonstrating professionalism, ethical conduct, confidentiality, and respect in all interactions.

The Need for Professional Qualifications

Professional qualifications are essential for ensuring that child care services meet nationally recognized standards of quality, safety, and child development. Children deserve caregivers who possess the knowledge, practical skills, and professional attitudes required to support their healthy growth and learning.

Obtaining the Child Care Giver NVQ Level 4 Qualification enables caregivers to:

  • Develop nationally recognized professional competencies.

  • Gain comprehensive knowledge of child growth and development.

  • Apply best practices in early childhood education and care.

  • Promote children’s health, nutrition, safety, and protection.

  • Deliver high-quality learning experiences that support holistic development.

  • Respond effectively to children’s diverse developmental and learning needs.

  • Strengthen communication and partnerships with families.

  • Enhance professionalism, ethics, and accountability.

  • Improve career opportunities and employability within the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) sector.

  • Contribute to raising the quality and standards of child care services in Sri Lanka.

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway provides experienced child care providers with an opportunity to have their existing knowledge, skills, and workplace experience formally assessed and recognized, enabling them to obtain the nationally recognized NVQ Level 4 Qualification without repeating learning they have already achieved.

Building a Better Future for Every Child

Investing in professionally qualified Child Care Givers is an investment in the future of Sri Lanka. Well-trained caregivers create safe, inclusive, and stimulating environments where every child can thrive. By strengthening the competencies of child care professionals through nationally recognized qualifications, we ensure higher standards of care, improved educational outcomes, and brighter futures for children, families, and communities.
